Because Planning Outfits Shouldn’t Be the Hardest Part
Stressing about what to wear for your photo session? You’re not alone—and the good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you're planning senior pictures in Cedar Rapids, a sweet family session in Marion, or a maternity session in my Central City studio, I’m here to help make the process feel simple and stress-free.
Here are my go-to tips for choosing outfits that look amazing on camera and feel like you.
For Seniors
Let’s make your session stand out. I always recommend bringing a mix of outfits—think casual and dressy, bold and neutral. Want to wear jeans and sneakers? Awesome. Have a dress you love? Bring it too. Layers like jackets are great for variety. And don’t forget accessories—hats, sunglasses, or your favorite boots can add a fun touch that reflects your personality.
Pro tip: Stick to solid colors or subtle prints. Avoid neon or logos—they’re distracting and don’t age well in photos.
For Families
Coordinating doesn’t mean matching. Start with one outfit you love—maybe mom’s dress or baby’s romper—and build from there. Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully (think creams, olive, dusty blue, or blush), especially with Iowa’s spring greens or golden summer light. Add texture with knits, linen, or denim.
For little ones, comfort is key. If they’re happy, you’ll be happy.
What to avoid: Busy patterns, bright reds, or everyone in jeans and white tees. Trust me, your photos will thank you.
For Maternity
Whether you’re outdoors or in the studio, flowing dresses or bump-hugging gowns both photograph beautifully. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable—this season is all about celebrating you. Soft fabrics and earthy tones (like sage, taupe, or ivory) pair well with the natural light in my Central City studio or the warm glow of a golden hour field.
Final Tips
- Lay out everyone’s outfits together to see how they look as a group.
- Make sure clothes are wrinkle-free and clean (lint rollers are your friend).
- Shoes matter—clean, simple footwear completes the look.
